This rare photograph of a Revolutionary veteran depicts Portsmouth's George Fishley (1759-1850), who served under George Washington at the Battle of Monmouth and spent time as a prisoner of war in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In later years Fishley, wearing his Revolutionary uniform, became a regular feature of local parades.
